Eco-tourism as Sustainable Development: Las Terrazas in Cuba

Recently, developing countries have promoted eco-tourism as a viable solution for the social and economic welfare of rural communities. This paper critically examines eco-tourism as a strategy for sustainable development and discusses the case of Las Terrazas in Cuba where an attempt was made by the government to incorporate sustainability into planning and decision-making.

Dr. Paponnet-Cantat holds a MA and PhD from Simon Fraser University, Canada. In 1988 she was offered a tenure track position at UNB in the department of anthropology. From 1994 to 1999, she was the director of FOCAL-Alantic (Foundation for the Americas) and the International Liaison Officer in the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International Cooperation). Since 2000, Dr Paponnet-Cantat has held the Chair position in the department of anthropology. Since the mid-1980s, she has conducted research on rural development in Peru, Cuba and New Brunswic
