The Teaching of the Humanities: Rights and Responsibilities

Dr Denise Egea-Kuehne.

In the current context of globalization and socio-political conflicts, rights to humanities education and the teaching of the humanities take a new dimension and urgency, and present new challenges. It is vital to understand the importance and the necessity of our cultural and humanities heritage. At the same time, it is necessary to make clear that one of the responsibilities of today's humanist, while affirming the essentially Western humanities heritage, is to move beyond the worn opposition between Eurocentrism and anti-Eurocentrism. One must recognize the role played by appropriation and transformation of the humanities and of the institutional and pedagogical models in non-European languages and cultures. Today, access and rights to humanities education and the teaching of the humanities are ever more necessary, for they are indispensable to understand our renewed responsibilities and to make responsible decisions.
